John Low, 60, from Singapore tells in an exclusive account, how he survived for 3 days while drifting in the open waters off Tioman, Malaysia out into the South China Sea.

The dive shop owner had set out from Mersing on May 4, 2019, on a routine boat run when he ran into problems. His boat pilot left on another vessel to get help. Stranded out at sea alone with no fuel, in worsening weather, John had time to only grab a lifebuoy when the storm sank his boat.

He clung to the lifebuoy for days as a search and rescue effort by boat was mounted by the Malaysian authorities. On day 4, he was spotted by a passing ship, the Diogo Cao, and rescued. He was airlifted by the Republic of Singapore Air Force to the Singapore General Hospital in serious condition.

Recovery took a month, and he is now living and working in Vietnam, and still heads back to the sea occasionally to dive.
